About Anna May Wong
Born Wong Liu Tsong in 1905 in Los Angeles, California to second generation Chinese American parents, Anna May was infatuated with films as a child. She landed her first leading role at the age of 17 in The Toll of the Sea. Despite receiving rave reviews for her work, she continued to be offered stereotypical roles. Tired of being typecast and passed over for lead Asian character roles in favor of non-Asian actresses, Anna May left for Europe in 1928 where she starred in several notable plays and films, becoming the first Asian American actress to gain international recognition. In 2022, Anna May became the first Asian American depicted on American coinage as part of the US Mint's American Women Quarter series!
