MISSION

Girls Write Now is a non-profit organization that mentors underserved girls and gender non-conforming youth to find their voices through the power of writing and community.

ABOUT

Founded in 1998, Girls Write Now is New York's first and only writing and mentoring organization for girls. As a nationally respected leader in arts education, Girls Write Now breaks down barriers of gender, race and poverty, pairing underserved youth with professional women writers and digital media makers to build skills, networks and life long relationships that open doors and brighten futures.

GWN breaks down barriers of gender, race and poverty, pairing underserved youth with professional women writers and digital media makers to build skills, networks and life long relationships.

It is the nation's top after-school program, having been distinguished three times by the White House and the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities and most recently recognized by the New York Community Trust as a top-ten semifinalist in the Nonprofit Excellence Awards. NBCUniversal Foundation recently awarded Girls Write Now’ Digital Media Mentoring Program its 21st Century Solutions grand prize for social innovation through media and Diane von Furstenberg named Girls Write Now a DVF People's Voice Nominee.

key milestones and achievements

Girls Write Now’s mentees — 95% high need and girls of color — have performed at Lincoln Center and the United Nations, published original work in Newsweek, Elle, The New York Times, BuzzFeed, Huffington Post, as well as Girls Write Now’s award-winning anthology, and earned hundreds of Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, while 100% of the organization’s seniors have gone on to college. From young women exploring writing to seasoned professionals practicing their craft every day, Girls Write Now is a community of women writers dedicated to providing the guidance, support and opportunities for high school girls to develop their creative, independent voices, and write their way to a better future!

Girls Write Now’s Writing Works workshops offer mentees support with college essays, scholarships, internships, and professional writing across a broad range of industries, including behind the scenes experiences with HBO, Penguin Random House, the Royal Bank of Canada, the beauty & lifestyle company Fresh, and many more. Writing Works mentees have the opportunity to interact with a wide range of professionals who use writing in their jobs every day.

Writing Works offers unique professional development at all levels from exposure in high school, to internships for college students and recent graduates, to entry and associate level employee placements. At Writing Works, GWN teaches mentees to take creative risks when telling their original stories in order to capture the attention of admissions officers and job recruiters, and rise to the top of the pile. GWN’s bright, diverse mentees are poised to become the next generation of creators, authors, producers, publishers, and talent.

Go backstage with a rock band, say goodbye to relatives as you start a new life, stand with an engineer solving a coding problem. Stare out from a coffin—or up at whales in the sky—and fall in love with the color of your skin. Experience tragedy in a mosque, feel the wounds of slavery, know the terror of glass shattering in a World War II village, and see how this next generation of leaders look to the past and write their present to create a better future. The Girls Write Now anthology series has been recognized as the Outstanding Book of the Year in the Independent Publisher Book Awards, and has earned additional honors from the International Book Awards, National Indie Excellence Awards, Next Generation Indie Book Awards, the New York Book Festival, the San Francisco Book Festival, and the Paris Book Festival.
