About Helen Keller

Helen Adams Keller (1880–1968) was an American author, disability rights advocate, political activist, and lecturer. Born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, Keller lost her sight and hearing at the age of nineteen months to an illness now believed to have been scarlet fever. Five years later, on the advice of Alexander Graham Bell, her parents hired teacher Anne Mansfield Sullivan. Through Sullivan’s extraordinary instruction, Keller learned to read and write in Braille and to use the hand signals of the deaf-mute, which she could understand only by touch. With Sullivan repeating the lectures into her hand, Keller studied at schools for the deaf in Boston and New York City and graduated cum laude from Radcliffe College in 1904. Her unprecedented accomplishments in overcoming her disabilities made her a celebrity at an early age and she received many honors in recognition. At age twelve, she published an autobiographical sketch in the Youth’s Companion and during her junior year at Radcliffe she produced her first book, The Story of My Life, still in print in over fifty languages. Widely honored throughout the world, Keller altered the world’s perception of the capacities of the handicapped. More than any act in her long life, her courage, intelligence, and dedication combined make her a symbol of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.

Piccolina Helen Keller

My granddaughter was thrilled with the Piccolina shirts she received for Christmas! Not only were they beautiful, but also depicted some of her personal favorite heroes with beautiful designs. As a first grader, she enjoyed reading about and discussing Helen Keller’s life and contributions. Now she is proud to wear her Helen Keller shirt and is looking forward to sharing it with her school friends online . She is also excited about her Malala and Mae Jemison shirts: also women she has read about as a first grader. We are looking forward to ordering more t-shirts depicting amazing women heroes from Piccolina as she reads more biographies. It’s important that she can share what she knows about the amazing women on her shirts. That being said, these shirts are beautifully designed and very appealing.

In Love w/ Helen

My daughter has been wanting Helen Keller to be one of the shirts options for a while now so much so that we emailed the company asking if they had plans to make one. That was maybe a year ago so when I saw it drop I ordered it right away.
All the shirts we have purchased are amazing quality and this one is no different. It’s soft, yet durable, easy to wash and the three shirts my daughter has had for over a year still look great in the material and the graphics.
