Simple items are the best bet for your newborn's comfort and your peace of mind! You'll be changing
diapers and outfits often so you're going to want easy on and off options. We recommend choosing soft
and breathable fabrics like cotton. Take our line of premium cotton onesies that all feature:
We believe in quality pieces for your baby to thrive – whether they're snoozing up a storm or

What Should Your Newborn Wear?
As your baby grows you'll certainly have your hands full of different sized clothes. From 0 to 3
months you may even see a lot of growth, so it could be a good idea to create a layette for your baby.
A layette is generally considered to be a term for a set of clothing. This will keep you organized and
eliminate the endless shopping and choices that come with having a growing newborn. Generally onesies
are incredibly popular choices, but there are other items to keep in mind when shopping for your baby.
-
A Coming–Home Outfit – You can keep this super simple and just include
a onesie, hat, and blanket as you bring your baby home from the hospital.
-
Mix–and–Match Outfits – While the onesie will be a top choice for
a long time, you may want to consider buying a combination of 5 shirts, 5 pants, and 5 footie
pajamas to start with and rotate in the beginning.
-
Seasonal Outfits – Think about how old your baby will be in the various
seasons to follow and consider purchasing a winter coat, snowsuit, a sweater, and a knit hat. For
the summer, consider a sunhat, bathing suit, and light–weight clothing (think linen and
cotton).
-
Extras – You don't have to spend a lot of money on some extra items like
additional blankets, socks, hats, or onesies. Consider purchasing a bag that can store extra diapers
and other essential items as you go for walks or just out in public.
What Should My Baby Wear During Its First Months?
While onesies are the go–to for pretty much any occasion, there are other clothes to choose.
Many parents choose to use a sleepsack or bundler which is basically a sleeping bag for your baby!
Sounds comfy, right! The bottom of this piece keeps their little legs inside so they can stay warm and
snuggly.
We should also mention how important accessory items are like hats, socks, booties, and burp
cloths/bibs. With different seasons to keep in mind, these extras will keep your baby well suited for
any situation.
Overall, the first few months are about comfort and warmth over much else. Even if it is sweltering
outside, your baby will most likely still need to stay fairly regulated so be sure to find items that
are breathable and 100% cotton.
Baby Clothing Sizes Explained
Sizing is difficult no matter how you look at it. There are so many different size guides to work
from, which makes it particularly difficult for new parents to understand what will work best for
their newborn. We've included some general weight guidelines to help with sizing. And while you should
account for your baby's length and how fast they are growing, this could be a great tool to return to
over the next few months or even years.
- Up to 5 lbs – P (Preemie)
- 5 – 8 lbs – NB (Newborn)
- 8 – 12 lbs – up to 3 months
- 12 – 16 lbs – up to 6 months
- 16 – 20 lbs – up to 9 months
- 20 – 24 lbs – up to 12 months
- 24 – 28 lbs – up to 18 months
- 28 – 30 lbs – up to 24 months
Below we've also included our Piccolina fit guide for baby clothes from 0–24 months. It's best
to measure for length, their chest, and sleeve length to get an accurate fit. You may even want to
think about sizing up for future use if your baby is growing fast!
How to Care for Baby Clothes?
While baby clothes can largely be treated and washed similarly to your own clothes, sometimes a little
extra attention goes a long way. Below we've broken down some of the best tips for washing, drying,
and even fighting stains!
Laundry Essentials
You'll want to make sure you have:
-
Mesh Laundry Bag – This is a great option to have to keep socks together and
wash with other small hats or bibs.
-
Gentle Detergent – Babies have incredibly delicate skin so many traditional
detergents are too harsh for them, especially in the beginning. Dreft has so many options and is the
#1 pediatrician–recommended baby detergent.
-
Stain Fighter – There are so many options on the market from Dreft to Persil
to even dish soap.
-
Baking Soda – A wonderful, natural option to keep smells at bay and clothes
smelling fresh.
-
Vinegar – A great cleaning agent to pair with baking soda or to use alone in
your washing machine.
-
Small Brush/Sponge or Toothbrush – To get out tough stains or to help your
stain fighter work better.
How To Treat And Wash Baby Clothes
Everyone has a different hack or trick to washing baby clothes. If you're a first time parent looking
for advice or just a parent looking for some new tricks, check out our top washing and drying tips
below. Take what resonates and leave what doesn't!
Stains
Nobody likes a stain! In many instances you can use a stain fighter/remover, but if your baby has
sensitive skin or is prone to irritation you may want to choose options that are a little less harsh.
Baking soda and vinegar work wonders if left on pee or poop stains (but make sure to sanitize in a
hotter wash cycle to further sanitize!). For baby oil stains or stains from bright fruits and veggies
try using some Dawn dish detergent and baby powder/cornstarch. Let sit for 20 minutes and then wash in
a hot water cycle after. Remember, in most cases it's best to blot stains rather than rub them in!
Pre–Wash
Some recommend pre–washing new baby clothes to remove any potential contaminants or irritants
from either shipping or manufacturing. Sometimes people just like to remove that new clothing smell.
Whatever your preference, you may want to consider washing your baby clothes before putting them on
your baby to see how they react to your choice of detergent.
Regular Wash
If you're not fighting off a tough stain, you'll want to check out the label on the individual piece
of clothing. You can put small items in a mesh laundry bag to avoid items getting lost in the shuffle.
However, you may also want to sort based on darks and lights to avoid the color bleeding, especially
with the first few washes.
Many baby clothes can be washed in a regular cycle with warm water, but this also depends on the
particular fabric or how dirty an item is.
Drying
This is largely based on your preference. Some choose to put their clothes in the dryer on a low
setting to avoid shrinking an item. Others choose to let their clothes air dry on a rack or air dry in
the sun.
