Celebrating Maria Montessori for International Day of Education + Our Favorite Montessori-Based Instagrams To Follow

This week marks the third annual International Day of Education, a day dedicated to 'the celebration of education's role in peace and development'. Started by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the movement is centered on the idea that "without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind."

We thought what better way to celebrate this special day than by launching a new Trailblazer tee honoring one of our favorite educators in history? Introducing: The Maria Montessori Trailblazer portrait, illustrated by artist Noa Snir.

Maybe you aren't familiar with Maria herself, but you've heard her last name - you've seen Montessori schools around your communities or heard friends reference Montessori learning. Well, they are indeed named after Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, educator, and innovator known for her educational method that builds on the way children learn naturally.

Maria believed a "prepared learning" environment was conducive to sense learning and creative exploration and she encouraged teachers to let children's natural interests take the lead. She opened the first Montessori school in 1907 and her educational method is still implemented today in many schools around the globe!

Montessori learning can be a lot of fun and there's a world of possibilities out there for how to implement this style of teaching/learning. That's why we're sharing some of our favorite mom bloggers who practice Montessori learning with their little ones. Explore their Instagrams and get inspired to make your own DIY play-based learning activities! And don't forget to check out our Maria Montessori Trailblazer collection here!
